Compress or extract directory using tar command

tar -czvf name-of-archive.tar.gz /path/to/directory-or-file/

or in current folder:

tar -czvf name-of-archive.tar.gz .
tar -xzvf archive.tar.gz -C /tmp

If you have file like backup.sql.gz, extract it:

gzip -d backup.sql.gz
